A GLITTERING evening of success marked the Launceston College Awards Evening 2016.
Students aged 12 to 19 were rewarded for their outstanding efforts whilst the Year 11 of the Summer 2016 were presented with their GCSE certificates. An array of very special guests attended the evening, with Professor Dame Celia Hoyles, former government adviser for mathematics, as the keynote speaker.
A pre-awards buffet, prepared by chef Ian Elson and his chef apprentices from Launceston College’s new ‘Inspired’ restaurant, began the evening in style. Numerous student leaders and house captains greeted the special guests to the buffet who also included Dr Steve Wharton of Bath University, engineer and Ellie’s Haven trustee Peter Heywood, education manager at Hall for Cornwall Isobel King, Jane Black from Cornwall Council, Baroness Jolly, John Stabb from Launceston Rotary Club, Colin Webb and head of UK Kaolin Platform Ashley Shopland.
In her keynote speech Dame Celia charged the room with her passion for the study of mathematics, a subject she brought to life and showed how it is integral to all and everything we do. Performance pieces during the evening included piano from Matt Parsons and a spine-tingling, goosebump-giving, jazz rendition from Issy Paul and Tom Sharman.
Executive Principal Jack Jackson said: “The high quality of the evening and the exceptional inspiration of the guests, is a fitting tribute and recognition for Launceston College students whose achievements are quite remarkable.”
Ashley Shopland, former student and CEO Imerys in St Austell, echoed this idea and said that on each occasions he had the chance to visit Launceston College in the last few years he has been hugely impressed by the quality and maturity of the students.
All of those at the evening, the four nominees and the award winners, have achieved exceptional things. Mr Maywood, Principal, was delighted to present the ‘Principal’s Award’ for the first time, to Louis March, whose string of A*s whilst also achieving as a house captain and leader on the school’s sports field, embodies everything that the College hopes young people will aim for.
