A CORNISH name with meaning and tradition has been given to a North Cornwall's club's new gig. Porthkragen is the old Cornish name for Crackington Haven, literally, 'Cove of the Little Crag' — Boscastle and Crackington Gig Club's new training gig was named in a ceremony at Crackington last Friday. The fibreglass gig was made by Trevor Deakin, of St Austell, and is an exact replica of the traditional wooden gigs rowed all around the coast of Cornwall. It will be used to train the club's members on calm lake water before they race in the sea. 'Porthkragen' was named by Sue Stickney, the club's longest serving lady rower and 11-year-old Josh Jones, the club's youngest active rower.
