THERE were a few extra residents in St Teath on Saturday, October 5, when 29 scarecrows were erected in gardens, on verges, under porches and tied to railings.

St Teath WI organised a scarecrow competition — the first of its kind in the village they believe — to help raise funds for the new village bus.

The WI committee were a little apprehensive when the idea was mooted in case no-one was interested, but it seemed to appeal to both individuals, businesses/associations and the school children in the village and some very entertaining ‘crows’ where exhibited.

They were judged very ably by the Rev Angela Cooper and Mr Paul Howard, head teacher at the school.

Maps to show the position of the exhibits were sold to those who wanted to take the ‘Scarecrow Trail’ and afterwards homemade soup and luscious puddings were available from the community centre as the allotment society had their annual soup kitchen lunch.

The winning entries were ‘What will we do with a drunken sailor’ by Marion Sinclair in the individual class, ‘Barry’ entered by the White Hart in the business/association class and ‘Paddington Bear’ made by Willow class from St Teath Primary School.

The money raised towards the bus was approximately £250.
