A BYPASS linking the A30 to the B3254 Bude road is needed if Launceston is to develop, a leading councillor told a meeting on Monday night. Liberal Democrat Cornwall Councillor for Launceston Central Alex Folkes said: "The thing Launceston needs if we are to develop properly over the long term is a bypass so we do not see all the traffic go through the town and particularly go over Newport bridge. "If you have a bypass, more things are possible." Cllr Folkes, who chaired Monday's meeting, referred to a survey to be undertaken in the autumn. Present at the meeting was Paul Allen from Cormac, part of a team that has been commissioned to undertake the survey, which will involve stopping cars and talking to drivers to ascertain their origins and destinations. Cllr Folkes said the survey was needed 'in order to get justification to have a bypass' — the survey would cost around £100,000. Kevin Hicks from Kivells asked if the people living on the surrounding roads that have seen their 'lifestyles being driven down over the last 20 years count for anything in the analysis?' Cllr Folkes said he 'would hope it be part of the balance to be looked at'. Mr Allen said he was sure it would be included in the overall analysis. But town councillor Graham Facks-Martin said he did not see any point in pursuing the proposed A30-B3254 link road: "If you came off the A30 at Liftondown you'd need a new bridge across the Tamar. You'd need quite a lot of room. You're looking at an awful lot of money." For the full report, and a round-up of the area news and sport, see this week's edition of the Post.
