On Tuesday evening, July 12, the Bude WI met for their monthly meeting. The president, Cynthia May greeted 86 members and 4 visitors. The meeting began with a rousing rendition of Jerusalem accompanied by Dorothy Gardiner at the Piano.

After the signing of the previous minutes, the membership were advised of many forthcoming events including, a Cornwall Federation Garden Party at Trewithen, a Bowling Afternoon, a mystery trip and craft workshops. Reports were given on the trip to Totnes river cruise to Dartmouth on July 1, which was enjoyed by 48 members and guests. Everyone was then much amused by the report of five members visit to the Bude Beavers Queen’s birthday party and what a fun afternoon they had had. A big thank you to all the Bude Beavers for their friendly welcome.

The guest speaker was Lesley Coles who talked about her visits to Mongolia to teach local women patchwork skills to enable them to become self-sufficient. The women, once trained, produce the most beautiful hangings and quilts, which they can sell via the State Department Store and in tourist outlets at the Airport.

These women have been empowered via the use of the needle. Lesley has a quantity of their wares, which she sells on their behalf, and the WI members spent the tea break examining the beautiful items and making a few purchases. Irene Wildman gave a thank you to Lesley.

As usual at WI meetings there were competitions and this month it was the next round of the Bude Bake Off, which requested four sweet Muffins.

The winners were: 1st Jane Culverwell, 2nd Janet White, 3rd Jen Bond and 4th Janet Hiller. The monthly competition was a homemade bag.

The selection was quite amazing and the winner was; 1st Jen Bond, 2nd Lynn Geldhart and 3rd Carol Sparham.

The flower of the month was won by; 1st Roz Sykes, 2nd Pat Harris and 3rd Jenny Dabbs.

On Saturday, July 16, 15 members from Bude WI travelled to Trewithen Gardens to attend the Cornwall Federation Garden Party. What a perfect day it was! The sun shone, Bodmin Town Band played and everyone was truly entertained by the Red Arrows Wheelbarrow Show!
