FIRE crews from across Cornwall were called to yet another fire on Bodmin Moor last Wednesday night, following a spate of fire incidents last weekend.
Starting shortly before midnight, the critical control centre received numerous calls to a gorse fire on Bodmin Moor. Resources from Bodmin and an officer were initially mobilised. On arrival, further resources were requested to deal with a mile long fire front. Additional resources attended from Lostwithiel and Launceston.
Shortly afterwards, further calls were received to the Bolventor area with reports of a further fire developing. Initial appliances attending were from Callington and Launceston, along with an officer.
It was quickly established that further resources were required to deal with four fire fronts spread over a distance of two miles. Additional resources from Wadebridge and Lostwithiel were mobilised, along with several other resources to deal with the fire.
During this period, a further fire was reported in the Dozmary Pool and Draynes Valley area. One appliance from St Austell and resources from St Dennis attended.
A command point was set up on Bodmin Moor as resources continued to deal with numerous fires.
Throughout the night, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service resources from many stations were hard at work. Stations included Bodmin, Launceston, Callington, St Austell, St Dennis, Delabole, Wadebridge, St Just and Lostwithiel, as well as five officers. Over 80 personnel were committed to the incidents, and the police were also in attendance.
On the morning of Thursday, April 18, police requested the public to ‘remain vigilant’ and report any suspicious activity to the police on 101, quoting log 71 of 18/04/19. To report a fire, dial 999 immediately and ask for the fire service.
In the early morning of Thursday, firefighters were ‘defensively’ monitoring the area for any further hotspots, with resources beginning to leave the scene at around 6.40am.
Following the incident, Cornwall Councillor for Camelford, Rob Rotchell, tweeted a response, thanking all the firefighters involved in putting out the blaze.
He said: “Big shout out to the guys of Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service who have worked through the night putting out numerous fires across Bodmin Moor. Thanks just doesn’t seem enough!”
