The High Sheriff of Cornwall, Paul Young-Jamieson visited Bude’s RNLI station in March, as he travelled across the county determined to visit each of the life saving headquarters. Cornwall’s RNLI stations was his chosen charity for his term of office. During his time as High Sheriff, Paul Young-Jamieson has raised over £7,000 through various fundraising events and had therefore accumulated enough money to present each of the stations with cheques of £500.

At his time in Bude, he was also given a guided tour of the station and given a deeper insight into operations during a call out by the crew. The tour started with an introduction from Bude’s Mayor Bob Willingham and was then introduced to the RNLI station’s President, Paul Finn and Deputy Launching Authority, Robin Bale. The High Sheriff was then shown around the life boat and launch boat before heading up to enjoy the view from the station.

Robin Bale, who was in charge of the station on the day, explained how great it was for the High Sheriff to be so interested in the members of the crew. He said: “I think everyone had a great time. He seemed to have a lot of knowledge about the RNLI — maybe because he had been to several stations before!”

According to Robin, the High Sheriff said that he thoroughly enjoyed the view that the station has, overlooking the sea.

He continued: “It was really nice that he took a genuine interest in the people that work here. We thoroughly enjoyed our tea and cakes whilst having a chat with him and his wife, who were both lovely.”

The High Sheriff then proceeded to present the Bude RNLI crew with their £500 cheque.
