A DOG who fell 100ft from cliffs at Menachurch, near Bude, is battling through her injuries and has said a big thank you to her rescuers, Bude Coastguard Rescue Team.

On Thursday, November 8, the team were paged to a report of a dog that had fallen around 100ft off the cliffs at Menachurch, near Northcott.

The dog’s owners, in Bude on holiday, subsequently found themselves cut off by the tide after they went down to tend her.

The team performed a technical rope rescue to recover the casualties, before retrieving the badly injured dog, Scout, a spaniel, up the cliff in a purpose-made dog bag.

On a final descent, the team recovered a member of the Bude Lifeboat crew, who had been deposited on the beach prior to the coastguard’s arrival, to assess and accompany the casualties, before it was deemed that the surf was too dangerous to operate the lifeboat in safely.

It had since returned to Bude and been recovered onto the beach.

With all the casualties recovered, and fearing the worst, a phone call was put in to forewarn Tamar Vets of their impending casualty.

Scout was rushed into the treatment room and was attended by three vets. X-rays and scans showed Scout had blood in her abdomen and had suffered a collapsed lung, but incredibly had no broken bones.

However, after a few days of close monitoring, Scout was soon deemed well enough to rejoin her owners, and even paid a visit to the coastguard team recently to say a big thank you — particularly to rope rescue technician Ben, who descended the cliff four times to recover the casualties, with help from the rest of the team.
