BOSCASTLE Coastguard were called to Strangles Beach near Crackington Haven at 11.44am on Saturday, after a member of the public came across an unidentified pyrotechnic washed up on the beach.

Members of the team were sent down to the beach to investigate and meet the first informant.

After some investigation and with the sea starting to lap up, it was deemed necessary to transfer the item into the pyrotechnics box and carry it to the nearest open field and await further instructions from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD).

With the bomb disposal team now on scene to investigate properly, the decision was made to deal with it in an open field, due to the unknown and condition it was in.

The item was dealt with and the team were stood down at 4.30pm.

A spokesperson for Boscastle Coastguard said: “The first informant did the right thing and called 999 along the coast. If you heard the loud explosion locally, now you know!”
