THERE was a short Service of Remembrance at Launceston War Memorial on Friday.
Town crier Rob Tremain began proceedings, and following the two-minute silence at 3pm, wreaths were laid by the mayor Cllr Dave Gordon, the Royal British Legion, the Royal Naval Association, and the RAF Association, followed by the ringing of St Mary's Church bells at 4pm.
The town beacon in Coronation Park was lit at 9.30pm by the mayor, World War Two naval veteran Edwin Pearce, and George Bearns, a member of the Launceston Youth Council, with the Launceston Junior Band playing wartime songs.
Cllr Gordon expressed thanks to those who had gathered for the beacon lighting, and said 70 years ago the community joined others all over the British Isles, the Commonwealth and its allied countries in celebrating the end of the six-year conflict.
He added, it was not, of course, the end of World War Two: "We must remember there was still a conflict going on with Japan in the Far East, and continued to do so until August of '45."
