IT was with great excitement that the children from St Petroc’s Prep School celebrated their 100th annual Sports Day on Friday, June 10.

Despite a rain delay of two hours, the children were extremely excited to get on with the day’s events in front of their families after weeks of practising.

Each child from Reception to Year 6 competed in all of the field events such as javelin, shot put, long jump as well as the track events 800m, 400m, 200m, 100m and 100m house relays with huge enthusiasm.

The children not only competed individually but also for their house teams with some of the children breaking school records.

Ben Hilton, head of PE, said: “What a full on day, that was enjoyed by all.

“We had some records broken and some were shattered. The children supported each other, regardless of their placing in the events and yet had maintained a healthy competition at the appropriate time.”

Parents treated their children to a picnic lunch on the field and the children were hugely excited and entertained watching their parents take part in a teachers v parents 100m relay race. The children were equally delighted when their parents defeated their teachers!

Headmaster, Dan Thornburn, said: “We encourage the children to take part in every event and it was fantastic to see them enjoying the day and supporting each other.”

“The afternoon ended when the heavens opened and all the children dashed inside for prize giving and a wonderful cream tea.”
