Carlsberg South West Peninsula League

Premier Division

Plymouth Argyle 5

A STRONG and very experienced Plymouth Argyle side, currently sitting on top of the SWPL, visited Pennygillam on Tuesday and returned to Home Park with a thumping 5-1 win, under the watchful gaze of manager Derek Adams.

Argyle fielded seven players currently in the club’s first team picture including the likes of David Fox, Gregg Wylde and Peter Grant, as well as the promising pair of Ashley Smith-Brown and Calum Dyson, who signed from Man City and Everton respectively in the summer.

Launceston made just one change from the side beaten at Camelford last week, Mike Burke replacing Reece Thomson in midfield.

Argyle dominated possession from the start but it took almost half an hour before they made the breakthrough, with striker Alex Fletcher opening the scoring. Rhys Walton quickly replied for the Clarets but promising attacker Luke Jephcott ensured the Pilgrims went into the break 2-1 in front.

Ten minutes into the second-half, Dan Rooney beat the offside trap and slotted past Josh Colwill who, along with his fellow defenders, was working overtime to keep the score down.

Five minutes later impressive right-back Tafari Moore, previously with Arsenal, broke clear down the right and saw his cross rammed home by Fletcher. Argyle could have run riot but the Clarets kept their shape and it was deep into injury time before Dyson crashed a fierce drive past Colwill to complete the scoring.

The result was a fair reflection of a game in which Argyle’s pace and power shone through.

Godolphin Atlantic 4

CALLINGTON?Town are out of the League Cup after losing a seven-goal classic in Newquay on Friday night.

Cally were 2-1 up inside 30 minutes as Jamie Rowlands put them in front either side of efforts from Kev McCallion and Phil Lowry (Godolphin).

Harry Southcott extended their lead further on 36 minutes and the shock looked on.

The game changed on the stroke of half-time as Callington’s goalkeeper was sent-off which resulted in Ross Fallens slotting home the spot-kick.

With ten men it was always going to be tough for the visitors despite putting up a fantastic rearguard effort.

However in the end, efforts from Lowry and Matt Sanders broke Callington hearts.

Falmouth Town 1

Launceston 2

LAUNCESTON ensured that they bounced back from Tuesday night’s defeat to a strong Plymouth Argyle side by defeating high-flying Falmouth Town at Bickland Park.

Despite the long trip to the Cornish coast, the journey back felt a great deal shorter, however, as the Clarets recorded their best result of the season, returning home a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

After a day of persistent heavy rain, the pitch was soft on top but still quite firm underneath. The surface cut up but overall played very well.

Falmouth had the better of the early exchanges with Clarets keeper Josh Colwill and his back four under sustained pressure.

The opening goal, after 33 minutes, saw the lively Tim Nixon fire in an accurate 22-yard free-kick which flew past Colwill. That was the only goal of a well-contested first-half which the title-chasing home side, on a run of six consecutive home wins, just about shaded.

The first clear chance of the second-half fell to Launceston. Influential midfielder Callum Watson was hacked down just outside the penalty area and Jordan Walton’s free-kick was deflected inches wide with keeper Ryan Barnes beaten.

Falmouth continued to shade possession as the game progressed but the Clarets were looking increasingly dangerous on the break.

Launceston equalised after 72 minutes. Substitute Mike Steele was heavily involved in a fine move which left Jordan Walton with just the keeper to beat.

Six minutes later and the Clarets were in front. Walton’s shot was deflected to Steele who played Tom Savigar through for a clear chance the young midfielder was never going to miss.

Launceston played out the remaining time to clinch a tremendous win which sets the side up nicely for four crucial home games in the next ten days, which started with Tuesday night’s visit from St Austell before title favourites Tavistock make the short trip on Saturday (3pm).

St?Austell 2

Camelford 0

CAMELFORD’s tough week continued as they lost 2-0 at St Austell on Saturday.

Having been knocked out of the FA Vase in their replay at Bodmin Town on Wednesday, the Camels were again missing a number of players.

Winger Harry Wilshaw thought he’d given Camelford a shock lead on the stroke of half-time but the assistant adjudged him to be offside.

Liam Eddy gave the home side the lead on 51 minutes as he smashed in from the edge of the box after a fine run.

The North Cornwall side continued to battle away but were undone once more on 83 minutes as Chris Reski fired home from 15 yards.

Bude Town 0

Elburton Villa 4

BUDE Town were knocked out of the Walter C Parson Funeral Directors League Cup on Saturday by higher league opposition in the shape of Elburton Villa.

On a wet and windy day in North Cornwall, it was the Premier Division side who started the stronger as they created several good chances, one of which saw them break the deadlock after eight minutes as a quick counter attack from a Bude corner saw centre forward Nick Aplin go through and finish smartly.

Their lead was doubled when a 25-yard volley from Lewis Chrimes which was well struck and with a severe tail wind, rocketed over stand-in goalkeeper Chris Hill’s head for 2-0.

The Seasiders battled well and put in a hard working display, but they were undone just before half-time when an error at the back was capitalised upon by Sam Carter, who drilled home to put the result out of Bude’s reach.

With little to lose, the hosts were far more adventurous in the second-half, with both Wes Pugh and Nathan Bonney forcing saves.

Despite the pressure, Elburton were still dangerous and their fourth goal came midway through the half when the ball was scrambled home by Carter from a corner. Despite conceding four, regular defender Hill was outstanding deputising in goal, making some superb saves and was deservedly named man-of-the-match.
