STUDENTS from Launceston have channelled their inner Bear Grylls recently after taking on the three tors challenge.
In a remarkable display of grit, teamwork and outdoor adventure, pupils from Years 4, 5, and 6 at Windmill Hill Academy and across the An Daras Trust took part in the exhilarating three tors challenge this half term — a feat that saw them scale three of Cornwall’s most iconic tors: Showery Tor, Brown Willy (the highest point in Cornwall) and Rough Tor.
Organised by Arena, the event brought together schools from across the region, celebrating not just physical endurance but also essential life skills.
Students were able to show their map reading expertise, geo-caching problem solving skills, leadership and teamwork, and demonstrated plenty of resilience and determination.
Accompanying the Windmill Hill Academy team were Mr Payton, Year 6 teacher, and Mrs Bassett, headteacher, who expressed immense pride in the pupils’ achievements.
Of course, such a challenge wouldn’t be complete without a mascot, and adding a touch of joy and comfort to the day was Bertie, the school’s beloved wellbeing dog, who accompanied the group every step of the way — tail wagging and spirits high.
Having pushed themselves to the limit and after the day of adventure and accomplishment, pupils certainly slept soundly that night.
The following day, students were able to celebrate their perseverance and success, as they wore their three tors challenge t-shirts with pride - a symbol of their success and a memory of a day they’ll never forget.
Headteacher at Windmill Hill Academy, Mrs Bassett has praised the students determination and has described the challenge as ‘inspiring’.
Commenting on the challenge, she said: “It was inspiring to see our pupils rise to the challenge with such enthusiasm and perseverance. What an achievement!”
