A virtual trek to the new Olympic stadium in London's East End has been undertaken this week by the athletic young people of Sir James Smith's Community School, Camelford. As actually walking the distance to Stratford — over 262 miles — may have highlighted a few health and safety problems the school's PE department decided instead on another strategy. A combination of Key Stage 3 pupils, other pupils, and willing staff, have been walking around the all-weather pitch in Sir Jim's grounds, with each 'lap' of the pitch being noted. Each student in Key Stage 3 has been asked to walk at least a mile if possible, most importantly carrying their own version of the Olympic torch as they have done so. Nick Eacott and Janine Wynan of the PE department have then been totting up the total to ensure that a virtual walk 'torch relay' to the capital city has really been undertaken. Staff have been invited to join in, and walk their own miles to add to the total. The effort has been part of National School Sport Week which has seen other pupils from throughout the country taking part in a series of events. The aim is to bring the anticipation of London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games into the classrooms and playing fields, and to encourage more young people to take part in more sport.
