THE Good Food Guide 2019 by Waitrose and Partners (GFG) has announced its top eateries and award winners — including Port Isaac’s Restaurant Nathan Outlaw.
Alongside the finest dining establishments in the country, the guide celebrates quality eateries in local areas and new discoveries.
Restaurants from across the region that have made it into the UK’s top 50 have been unveiled, with the top scoring restaurant in the South West named as Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, Port Isaac. The restaurant was not only the top-scoring restaurant in the South West, but has once again been awarded the number one spot in the GFG’s top 50 for the second year running.
Chef Nathan Outlaw has achieved a perfect cooking score of ten for the third year in a row.
It was said: “The real draw here is Nathan Outlaw’s confident cooking, which combines considerable skill with a knack for deploying first-rate seafood to its ultimate advantage. There’s a refreshing lack of pomp, especially when you consider that Restaurant Nathan Ooulaw is a must-do for anyone on the serious gastronomic circuit. The no-choice tasting menu is ingenious in its simplicity, yet continues to surprise.”
Elizabeth Carter, editor of the Good Food Guide by Waitrose and Partners, said: “This is the perfect Good Food Guide restaurant, embodying everything we champion. Note the consistency of the cooking, the simplicity of the set-up and the excellent service devoted to diner enjoyment with no formality.
“Expect the freshest ingredients, from shellfish and fish from sea and estuary, to locally grown fruits and vegetables alongside a brilliant wine list. It is with great delight that Restaurant Nathan Outlaw has been awarded a perfect ten for the third year running, and retains the number one spot in our top 50.”
The Good Food Guide’s annual top 50 restaurant ranking is highly regarded by chefs and restaurant-goers alike, with particular attention paid to those chefs and restaurants who make it into the top ten.
The list recognises the very best talent in the country and a place on it represents a huge achievement. Each position is decided by a combination of cooking score, editor appraisal and the strength of reader feedback. A cooking score of ten means ‘just perfect dishes, showing faultless technique at every service; extremely rare, and the highest accolade the guide can give’.
Other notably high scoring restaurants in the region featuring in the Top 50, alongside Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, include Bohemia in Jersey, Le Champignon Sauvage, Cheltenham, and Whatley Manor, The Dining Room, Wiltshire.
The Good Food Guide champions local eateries that you may not find in more traditional restaurant guides. In addition to anonymous inspections, the GFG’s research list is based on the huge volume of feedback received from readers and this helps uncover foodie finds from across the UK each year.
Readers were asked to nominate their favourite neighbourhood restaurants, places that give a warm welcome and share a passion for local produce, plus a commitment to the community.
This year’s Best Local Restaurant in the South West is The Three Tuns, Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire. The Good Food Guide editors said: “This is the sort of village pub that’s a real community asset, bringing locals together for whatever reason — food, beer, quiz night, etc. The unpretentious menu combines pub classics, including cracking Sunday roasts, with more modern ideas and prices are decidedly modest. It’s the local pub we all want on our doorstep.”
