PROVING learning is for life, a group of local students have been gaining invaluable work experience while delivering what they learn in the classroom to the youngest of community members.

Early Years students from Duchy College Stoke Climsland have been working closely with WOW baby and toddler group, which runs at Stoke Climsland Church every Wednesday.

WOW leader, Jan Parsons, said there is ‘an amazing relationship between the college and WOW’, adding: “The students have been helping at the group regularly for over five years. They are a very big asset to us, a blessing to the group.

“Each week we have story time, some singing, a music session and an activity. The students provide a different activity every other week; they put a lot of thought into it.”

Level 3 Early Years educator student, Lucy Connell, from Callington, is in her second year of helping at WOW. She said: “It is a lovely group and what I really enjoy is getting to work with the parents too, seeing things from their perspective, which we don’t get to see in other placements.

I am really enjoying the course at Duchy. For anyone looking to build a career within childcare, I would definitely recommend it.”

Fellow Early Years educator student, Chloe Tuson, said she enjoys planning craft activities for the children every other week. She said: “This week, we are making handprint snowflakes and they really seem to be enjoying it. It is great to be able to put into practice what I have learnt in the classroom.”

Parent, Lucy Lloyd, who regularly attends WOW, said the students ‘really are a valued addition to the group’, adding: “Their help not only with the craft table but all aspects of the morning sessions are really appreciated.”

Team lead for Early Years at Duchy College, Laetitia Mayne, said it is a ‘fantastic opportunity’ for students. She said: “It really gives our students the rare chance to engage with parents, which they wouldn’t normally get to do. Our students and their activities are always warmly welcomed and we look forward to continue working with WOW in the future.”
