SCOTT Mann, Conservative MP for North Cornwall, paid a visit to Highgate Hill House School in Whitstone on November 4, where he received a tour of the facilities.
Mr Mann met with headteacher Vicky Skelton and chair of board (director) Julie Smith to hear about the educational offer and philosophy of the school, before receiving a tour of the facilities.
Highgate Hill House School is a brand new, co-educational day special school for up to 35 students aged between five and 16 years who have additional needs — including autism.
The school combines classroom learning, with an outdoor learning and forest schools programme and therapeutic interventions.
It is a two storey, purpose built teaching block set in extensive grounds, which include playing fields and woodland.
Mr Mann said he was ‘very impressed’ and added that he thinks what the school is doing is ‘fantastic, much needed in the area and completely in line with the government’s agenda for education.’ He explained that he supports the governments agenda for more choice for parents and a greater range of different types of school.
Ms Skelton said: “We are a school community built on positive relationships. We work with young people their families and others to build a programme of learning and therapeutic intervention that is right for them. We offer a nurturing environment, where students with additional and complex needs can be supported to fulfill their potential.”
The school holds various open days and coffee mornings throughout the year for prospective parents, professionals and community organisations.
