VILLAGERS in Pyworthy recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the village hall with a traditional afternoon tea.
It was an event which was followed by an evening session where attendees were entertained by ‘The Club Classics Band’.
Prior to the band coming on stage, those present shared stories of the history of the hall. From the two walks that were arranged by Mike Johns and many other supporters, raising £2,250 and this together with a legacy from William Rowcliffe Sleeman allowed the work to start.
A spokesperson for Pyworthy Village Hall said: “So in April 1983 it all came together. First the wall, built by a group of volunteers from the Village. Then the main hall built by Denner and Parnell who were also local builders. Overall completion April 1985.
“None of this would have been possible without the dedication of countless volunteers and visionaries who have kept the Hall alive and thriving.
“From day one the hall has been a hub of activity from parties, hosting wedding receptions, seasonal fairs, fundraisers, dances and many, many more.
“As we celebrate this milestone, it is also a time to look forward. While the village hall has a rich history, its role in the community remains as vital today as it was forty years ago. “Over the last few years, we have modernized both the ladies and gents' toilets. installed solar panels, WiFi, upgraded the heating, and improved accessibility and these are just a few of the enhancements that have been carried out. So long may it continue.
“Finally, Henry Johns, a long-time resident of the village and one of the founder members of the village hall, who still continues to work tirelessly behind the scenes, without any questions being asked.
“In recognition of his dedication Henry was appointed/elected Honorary President of the Hall, that same evening.”
