Pupils from Bradford and Black Torrington Primary schools were invited to visit the North Devon Foodbank to deliver the donations they had been collecting as part of their harvest celebrations.
Two Year Six pupils from each school were invited by volunteers at the Holsworthy branch to deliver the donations that pupils, staff and their families had collected throughout the harvest period. The donations included food items, as well as hygiene and household products that will be distributed to support those in need.
During the visit, the pupils were able to learn all about how the charity works, including how they sort and deliver donations.
The pupils were also given the opportunity to meet with volunteers and learn about how the food is weighed, checked and sorted before being delivered to those who need it most.
The children even got to help the volunteers weigh the schools’ donations using their maths skills to calculate the total weight of the food collected.
The pupils from the schools really enjoyed taking part in the annual harvest festival celebrations and being able to help out those in their local community.
Each year, the harvest festival period provides an opportunity for the children to learn about the importance of showing kindness and helping others – which are values the schools are keen to promote.
Joanna Luxford, Principal for both Bradford and Black Torrington Primary Schools, said:
“I was very proud seeing the pupils conduct themselves in such a mature manner. They asked thoughtful and polite questions throughout the tour and learnt a lot about the charity’s operations.
“It was a really lovely way to wrap up our collection efforts and useful opportunity for the children to gain more insight into the donation process and see where the product of their hard work is going. I hope that we can do more to support the foodbank in the future as it was a really rewarding and worthwhile experience for all involved”.
