OTTERHAM Primary School held a touch rugby development day for local primary school children on Tuesday, October 17.
This was attended by six of the moor and coastal cluster of schools that is centred around the Camelford area.
The intention of these sessions is to enthuse the children learn about touch rugby through small-sided games and fun skill developments.
This has become an annual event, which also seeks to prepare the children for competitive tournaments later in the school year, and which is supported by Camelford RFC.
Children between the ages of five and ten were involved during the day. This event is also used as CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training for the teachers who are asked to deliver touch rugby at their respective schools.
The morning session was for children in Key Stage One and was attended by 50 plus children representing Otterham, Camelford, St Teath, St Breward, Tintagel and Delabole schools.
Key Stage Two attended the afternoon slot with a similar number representing Otterham, Camelford, St Teath and St Breward schools.
Amongst the older pupils, St Breward showed a real appetite and aptitude for touch rugby, though all of the children showed a real desire to improve.
Mr Osborne, who is the PE teacher at Otterham as well as the president of Camelford RFC, was thrilled by their enthusiasm and pleased to be able to develop the game with so many young children.
In each session, Mr Osborne put the pupils through exciting rugby related warm-ups, a lengthy skills session and small-sided games, while the Key Stage Two children finished their sessions with some games of touch rugby. All the children went away having had a great time and keen to do more of the sport so another successful event took place.
PE co-ordinator at St Teath Primary School, Jack Proctor, messaged Otterham School with the following message: “Good Morning Nic, once again yesterday was fantastic, thanks. All my children loved it and it gave me many ideas for leading rugby practices better!”
