THE?Fresh and Local Supermarket in Tintagel was closed recently in the wake of difficulties running the store.
The supermarket in Tintagel was originally built by G Climo and Son of Treknow, Tintagel, in the 1920s for Percy Youlton. Percy had a small shop opposite the new store and was the dealer until the 1930s when he retired. Arrivals, of Launceston, took over the lease of the shop and enjoyed some success before having to close it down in 1939.
Bill Flower and his wife Sybil took over the lease not long after and eventually bought the property. They traded under the name W H Flower and son until 1959 when Bill died, upon which time son Bob took over the store and ran it with his wife Sheila. He remained the owner until 1989, also starting the Mace agency in that time.
The property was then bought by Keith and Carol Turner, who changed the store to a Londis and ran it from 1989 through to February 2007. It was then leased to Andy and Margaret Pascoe, and they were in charge until July 2009 when the present owners took over the store.
This is the first time that the Tintagel Supermarket has been closed for 69 years and the local people hope that it re-open again soon.
