PUPILS at Holsworthy Primary School recently repurposed items that would have otherwise been thrown away to make festive Easter bonnets, which they then paraded through the town.

Pupils got crafty and turned items such as plastic bottles, silver foil, egg boxes, sweet wrappers, newspaper and stray bits of ribbon, into colourful Easter bonnets.

Lead on this project was the school’s eco-co-ordinators Sue Knock and Amanda Thompson.

Sue said: “Basically we are a Church of England school and always go to the local church for Easter. This year we thought we would try and tie in an eco theme and so all the pupils from nursery right up to Year 6 got involved and made an Easter bonnet — we had a really great response actually, all the children were really enthusiastic.”

Sue is the school’s nursery teacher and Amanda is in charge of ‘forest school’. They teamed up to become the school’s eco-coordinators in order to encourage pupils to think more about recycling and the impact of waste on the planet.

Sue said: “We have an eco club after school on Tuesday and the children have been getting involved. It is great, we have already started recycling paper and cardboard and will be holding an assembly soon to discuss how we can progress.”
