CALLINGTON’S first community litter pick day was hailed a great success after the team of 15 volunteers amassed 45 sacks of rubbish during the two-hour event in the town on Saturday, February 4.

The morning was organised by local resident, Michael Raphael, and the town’s Cornwall Councillor, Andrew Long.

The team cleaned the streets around Tavistock Road, Pengelly Lane and the Lamorna Parc and Coronation Road estates.

Mr Raphael said: “I would like to thank all those who took part in this event. It was heartwarming to see so many people turn up to help make their town a better place to live in. Hopefully this will be the first of many. We have already had calls from other towns for advice on how to arrange such an event.”

His words were echoed by Cllr Long. He said: “When Michael came to me for help on this, I was so impressed by the enthusiasm he has shown and dedication to get things done. With the help of Ginsters, Callington Town FC and in particular, Callington Town Council and the portreeve, we had a great morning and I am sure more will follow.”

Mr Raphael is working on a presentation for local organisations, in the hope that this can be the catalyst for future events.
