THE children at Otterham Primary School put their legs to good use last week by making an extra effort to walk to school.

Headteacher Helen Ward said: "We are so proud of the number of local children who do this as part of their daily routine anyway. However, with a large intake of children living too far to commute the whole way on foot, such as Camelford and Tintagel, it has enabled lots more children to 'park and stride.

"As a school we encourage children to think green and in particular methods in which we can help our environment, such as walking instead of taking the car."

Class 2 has even taken a step further, looking at ways in which tourism effects the environment. This has created links between their science and topic work.

The entire school has spent time considering the benefits of walking and focusing on methods to raise awareness. Time has been spent identifying how important exercise is to our health, as well learning vital road safety skills.

Most importantly for some children, they have come to realise how fun and easy it is to walk. The teachers were particularly impressed as their class had activated their brain just in time for lessons to start!

Helen added: "The Walk to School Week has been intended to send out a strong message that as a school, we care about our health, the environment and the wider community. Thank you to all who partook in the challenge!"
