In the run up to today’s General Election some of the hopeful local candidates have had the support of their respective parties accompanying them as they make their electioneering ring rounds. Holsworthy Square was the centre of attention on Monday afternoon when high ranking Conservative Francis Maude was in town with candidate Geoffrey Cox.

The Rev Chris Tomlinson, Superintendant of the Launceston area Methodist Circuit awoke on Sunday (May 27) to be threatened by wind and rain for Wesley Day 2001. In spite of this, preparations went ahead.

June 7, 1986

The “gut reaction” of North Cornwall people in making their feelings known at the possibility of nuclear waste being dumped on their doorstep was applauded by leading Greenpeace campaigner Mr George Pritchard, speaker at Launceston last Friday.

Eddie Dart, of Launceston Rotary Club, was presented with the Paul Harris award for outstanding service to Rotary.

June 5, 1976

Stan Hillman, of Delabole, who started as a linotype apprentice at ‘The Cornish & Devon Post’ in 1925, returned to ‘The Post’ five years ago to complete his working life. To mark his retirement there was a presentation by the Editor, Mr Arthur Venning.

Allison Ogborne presented a door-knocker to Mr J Pattison after he had opened the Ashwater Arts and Crafts Exhibition at the Primary School. He was introduced by the headmaster, Mr M Freestone.

Thirteen-year-old comedian Stephen Rickard was the champion at Bude Central Methodist Youth Club talent competition.

Miss Angela Clarke us the 1976-77 Whitstone Carnival Queen. She was chosen at a talent contest which was won by R Ackford and G Dinnis (children), Mr and Mrs Littlewood (adults).

Mr Barry Jordan, a 26-year-old machine operator with Tillotsons, won the three-cornered by-election for one seat on Launceston Town Council.

June 4, 1966

South Petherwin may have its own public house early next year if a plan submitted to Launceston Rural Council is approved.

The retiring queen, Roselda Hodge, crowned the twin queens, Angela and Louise Lebe at St Giles May Revel.

Mr Alfred James Wroth, 73, of Church Street, Launceston, has completed 60 years as a member of St Mary’s Guild of Ringers.

At a meeting of Holsworthy RDC Mr F H Stanlake proposed that a joint effort be made to attract light industry to the area of Holsworthy Rural, Bude-Stratton Urban and Launceston Town Councils.

June 16, 1956

A suggestion from Callington Parish Council that the 30-mile-an-hour speed limit should be reimposed on a stretch of the Callington – Kelly Bray road has been turned down by the Minister for Transport.

Trains in the former Great Western Railway colours, chocolate and cream, made their appearance on Western Region with the introduction of the summer timetable.

Mr Edwin Malindine, prospective Liberal candidate for North Cornwall, told his audience in an address on Saturday at Delabole Liberal Club that “opportunity is knocking at the door” for the Liberal Party. He said disappointed Conservative voters and disillusioned Labour voters in ever increasing numbers were turning to the party.

June 8, 1946

Local representatives selected to take part in the Victory Parade in London on Saturday are; Private C Hicks, Bude (Home Guard); Mr Maurice Sage, Hatherleigh (YFC); Sgt A J E Perryman, Lifton and PC L J Jones Launceston (Police); CPO Watts, RN, Launceston (Hospitals); A C J Holloway, Callington (RAF Police).

Miss Barbara Goodman has been chosen as South Petherwin’s Victory Queen, with Misses Diana Jasper and Shirley Dymond as attendants.

For the first time in its history, Launceston Golf Club’s Chamber of Trade Cup has been won by a lady. Mrs B Sluggett with a net score of 73.

“Quite a lot of people are luke-warm about Victory Celebrations and think we have little to be thankful for – but they are entirely wrong”, said Mr T Kivell, presiding at a welcome home dinner given to ex-service personnel at the White Hart Hotel, Holsworthy. So far, 150 of the 360 from the town have returned from service.

Mr Horace Kittow, of Launceston, has been elected president of the Cornish Auctioneers’ and Valuers’ Association.

The Camelford Players held their first half-yearly meeting on Thursday when Mrs R M Dalton-Thrupp was elected chairman/producer and Mrs Richards secretary/treasurer, with Miss P White, Mrs W Treweeks and Mrs E Pearse on the committee. The first public performance is planned for July.

June 6, 1936

Bude Territorists’ rifle team did well in the county shoot at Hayle on Saturday winning several awards.

Camelford’s new market, erected at a cost of £1,500 on a site directly opposite the old one, was officially opened on Thursday by Capt W C J Spear.

Padstow lifeboat was called by Tintagel Coastguards to the aid of a Port Isaac fisherman alone in his small boat in a squall off Tintagel Head. Happily the man, Mr George Honey, succeeded in getting his boat home safely.

On Wednesday His Majesty King Edward VIII visited the home farm at Stoke Climsland.

Miss Monica Olde, of Clifton House, Boscastle, was a successful competitor in the dairy classes of the Bath and West Show last week, as were Misses Gwendoline Olde (Boscastle) and M E Sandercock (Callington).

Barn Park, a freehold bungalow at Ridgegrove Lane, Launceston, was sold at auction on Tuesday for £1,030.

100 years ago

June 12, 1926

After a lapse of 27 years the Royal Cornwall Show was held at Launceston this week on the old sire below Windmill. Entries were a record totalling (with local shows) 2,851 and the attendance of 17,132 was higher than the two previous years despite Wednesday being very wet and stormy. President of the Association is Mr E G Barren Lethbridge (Tregeare) and the local president is Mr A M Williams MP (Werrington Park). Mr H Kittow was local general secretary. The mayor, Mr H Hoskins, took part in the opening ceremony.
