CAMELFORD is to improve information for tourists and visitors to the historic market town.

At the meeting of Camelford Town Council on Thursday evening, September 5, councillors discussed ways in which to improve information about the town for visitors and tourists, with new town explorer maps for people to buy and a map to be placed in the centre of town.

Firstly, councillors discussed purchasing explorer maps of the Camelford area to sell in the library.

Mayor Claire Hewlett began: “People have been coming in asking our staff for maps of the local area.”

The quoted price for the explorer maps, which would be similar to booklets for people to purchase from the library, was £254 for 25.

Cllr Lauren Rathbone thought it would be a positive thing, and said: “You get a lot of walkers around here!”

Deputy mayor Rob Rotchell agreed, adding: “There’s nowhere to go to get these kind of maps around here.”

Cllr Ayla Ackroyd Johnson proposed the idea and Cllr Sue Elford seconded, the vote was carried.

Similarly, councillors also discussed a new town map to be placed in the poster case next to the Masons Arms in the centre of Camelford.

Town clerk, Esther Greig, had received quotes from two design companies, with one being from TLC Agency who had designed OCM Skatepark’s branding. TLC’s quote stood at £576 for the sign, whilst the other quote came in at £850 with three years of free updates.

Speaking about TLC Agency, Ms Greig said: “We’ve had his work at OCM and he’s very good at what he does. He’s local too!”

She added that the council has £2,000 in the budget to do one map.

With their previous work on OCM Skatepark’s branding, as well as being local to the area, Cllr Rotchell proposed that the council ask TLC Agency to undertake the work to create an up-to-date town map. Cllr Rathbone seconded, and six councillors were in favour, while three were against and one abstained.
