NORTH Cornwall MP Dan Rogerson insisted that risk education is a "vital component" for young people in schools during his visit to a Camelford school on Thursday, March 29.

The Liberal Democrat politician made the statement during a visit to Sir James Smith's Community School, where he learnt how the school helped prepare its pupils to be safe in the world of work.

Using a programme created by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Workplace Hazard Awareness Course (WHAC) Sir James Smith's School has been able to help prepare their students for the risks associated with the world of work.

Using real life cases, the course gets them to think about the 'real' safety risks they may face on a work placement, or when starting in their first role.

Mr Rogerson said: "Meaningful experience of the workplace is a vital component of education for young people in our schools. We all have to manage risk and prioritise safety in the working environment, so the course is a great way of developing important skills and an awareness of the need for safe working.

"I was very impressed with the way the project has been delivered in Sir James Smith's School and I hope other schools and colleges will take it up."
