THE mayor of Bude-Stratton, Cllr Mike Dawe, says it has been a ‘positive’ year for the area, with plenty more planned for 2026.
He said: “As 2025 comes to a close, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on what has been a positive and busy year for Bude and Stratton. Across heritage, community life, culture and local events, our town continues to show real pride and resilience. Thank you to everyone who has played a part — whether through volunteering, community projects, running local businesses or simply looking out for one another.
“In May, I was honoured to be elected mayor of Bude-Stratton. This year’s elections were encouraging, with residents stepping forward to represent the town and stay involved in local decision-making.
“One of the highlights of 2025 was the national and regional recognition for the Compass Point Project and the preservation of the Storm Tower. Winning the Cornish Buildings Group Award and being shortlisted for the RICS UK Heritage Awards was a real achievement. The careful move and rebuilding of the Storm Tower has protected a much-loved landmark and shows what can be done when people work together.
“We were pleased to welcome visits from High Sheriffs of Cornwall during the year, giving us the chance to showcase the incredible work of our volunteers, community groups and organisations. The Spirit of Bude Awards were a special way to recognise those who quietly give so much to our town.
“Important anniversaries brought us together in remembrance, including VE Day 80, VJ Day 80, Remembrance Sunday, Armistice Day and the Battle of Stratton commemoration.
“Cornish culture also remained at the heart of community life, with well-attended St Piran’s Day celebrations and events during Speak Cornish Week helping to keep our traditions and language alive.
“A huge thank you to everyone who supports our community throughout the year. Your efforts really do make a difference.
“As we look ahead to 2026, the council will continue to focus on protecting our heritage, supporting local businesses, maintaining community services and listening to residents.”
