A THEATRE group providing a platform for creative young people is celebrating its second birthday following two years of sparkle and shine.

In April 2023, Amy Hodgson and Sarah Bradley established Launceston Youth Music Theatre (LYMT), a brand new group hoping to provide opportunities for young people in the Launceston area to train in musical theatre.

The vision was to provide a safe space for young people to express their creativity, take risks, build confidence, foster friendships in addition to taking part in concerts, events and full scale musicals during the school year.

Co-founder Amy told the Post: “In the last few years, we have entertained audiences with a sell-out production of Shrek the Musical, a Disney concert, and a production of Legally Blonde, involving our senior students. We have also performed at the Launceston Show, the Charles Causley festival, and the Mayor's civic reception, where we were chosen as one of her CIC charities of the year.”

So far the group has put on a number of shows, including Shrek the Musical, Be Our Guest, and Legally Blonde, each of which was met with high praise from audiences.

“After opening our doors to a further 40 students last term, and taking on two new members of staff, LYMT is now able to offer musical theatre sessions to young people from six to 18 years old,” Amy continued. “Our sessions on a Saturday morning incorporate singing, acting and dance, with three shows now planned for the year ahead. These will be Pantastic (a Peter Pan musical) for our younger students, School Of Rock in February half term, and Into the Woods, a musical for our senior members in July 2026.”

Amy added that the team are proud to “put Launceston firmly on the map when it comes to providing high quality musical theatre training and opportunities in Cornwall.”
