STUDENTS in Launceston have been learning about how to stay safe at the beach ahead of the summer season.

St Stephens Community Academy in Launceston had the pleasure of welcoming Ivo and Leon from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), who delivered an inspiring and informative session all about beach safety.

The children were completely captivated as they learned how to stay safe while enjoying Cornwall’s beautiful coastline — something especially important for families living near the sea.

The visiting pair took students through a variety of topics during the session, each vital to ensuring safety while enjoying a swim at the beach.

The children discovered the meanings of the different beach flags used by RNLI lifeguards, how to identify safe swimming areas, and what steps to take if they or someone else finds themselves in difficulty in the water.

As well as this, students even got a fascinating look at some of the essential equipment used by lifeguards and how demonstrations of how it is used in real-life rescue scenarios.

Maura Furber, executive headteacher at the school, said: “Ivo and Leon were incredibly impressed with the children’s attentiveness, enthusiasm, and thoughtful questions, and they left with a big smile, commenting on what a pleasure it was to speak with such engaged young learners. They also mentioned they hope to see everyone enjoying the beach safely this summer!”

The visit was well timed, as students have been undertaking swimming lessons as part of their PE curriculum this term, another step in keeping them safe during the summer months.

Ms Furber continued: “A big thank you to the RNLI for their vital work and for helping our children at St Stephens Community Academy become more confident and safety-aware when enjoying the water!”
