THE arrival of Christmas in Launceston was hailed as a ‘truly magical night’ by its town council.

A range of entertainment was on offer for the residents as they got together in eager anticipation of the festivities that lay ahead, with everything from a visit from Father Christmas, a switch on of the lights by the town’s carnival royalty and a range of performers all bringing the season’s greetings to the town in style.

Stage entertainment started at 4pm with performances from several local schools, namely Windmill, St Catherines, St Stephens, North Petherwin and Boyton and Lewtrenchard.

There was street entertainment throughout the night, music from Launceston Town Band and entertainment from Access theatre. There was also a light show on Southgate Street, Living Statue in the Town Square and Church Street, stilt walkers and reindeer puppet throughout the town.

St Mary Magdalene Church opened its Christmas Tree Festival and Central Methodist Church held a free family fun evening.

The light parade was led by St Stephens School’s Samba Band and choir, Cllr Rob Tremain as Town Crier, Father Christmas was kindly driven to the square on his sleigh by Eagle Plant and accompanied by the deputy mayor Cllr John Conway while the Launceston Fire Brigade played their part in the event and helped ensure the route was safe.

Following Father Christmas was the carnival royalty, Launceston in Bloom, Access Theatre and Launceston Town Band.

The lights were then switched on by the carnival royalty following a big crowd countdown which was led by Magic Martin.

A spokesperson for Launceston Town Council said: “It was a truly magical night where the community came together to kick start Christmas in Launceston. We would like to thank all our sponsors, businesses and community who make the event such a special evening.”
