YOUNGSTERS in Launceston are flexing their linguistic muscles as they embark on a journey of learning Cornish.
Pupils and staff at St Catherine's C of E School, Launceston are very excited to start working towards their Go Cornish bronze award.
Go Cornish brings the Cornish language to life both inside and outside the classroom. It provides a whole school programme that sets out a clear framework to celebrate the ancient language in fun and immersive ways, whilst promoting its use across your whole school community.
Go Cornish founder Will Coleman recently paid a visit to St Catherine’s to bring the language to life for pupils and parents.
The school have joined 30 existing schools across Cornwall committed to embedding the Cornish language in their day to day life, but has said that it is excited to be taking the learning further by teaching Cornish as a language.
Touching on the new scheme, the school's Go Cornish champion, assistant head of school Oliver Stephens, said: “There is already such a passion and thirst among the children and staff to learn more Kernewek. I can't wait to see where this journey takes us.”
The school has expressed that the scheme not only allows children to learn a new language, but also gives them a new avenue to explore their culture.
Louise Hussey, executive head teacher, added: “We are very excited to be joining this initiative where children will celebrate and learn about the unique language and culture of our special part of the world.”
Go Cornish was commissioned by Cornwall Council for all primary schools in Cornwall following official government recognition of the Cornish language and led to the Cornish Language Strategy 2015-2025 which set out how to work together to increase the use of Cornish.
