Students and staff have been celebrating at two Launceston primary schools after they topped Cornwall’s Key Stage 2 results.

According to official results data released in December, Egloskerry Primary School and Altarnun Primary School have exceeded national standards with excellent reading, writing, and maths results.

Egloskerry Primary School has been ranked as the third highest performing school in Cornwall for the percentage of pupils achieving a greater depth of learning in reading, writing, and maths combined.

This means it is in the top 8 per cent of all schools across the UK for writing progress, and well above national averages for pupils learning in ‘Greater Depth’ across reading, writing, and maths. At Egloskerry, 33 per cent of the cohort achieved this high standard of learning, compared to eight per cent nationally.

Altarnun Primary School,  is now ranked seventh out of 269 schools across Cornwall for reading progress and in the top seven per cent of the county for the highest average reading scores for Key Stage 2 pupils.

Both schools are a part of the Athena Learning Trust. However, it is not only primary schools which are performing within the Trust.

A spokesperson said: “The trust is committed to ensuring excellence across all stages of learning, and at the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, results are consistently in line with national averages, including at Launceston Primary School which opened in 2021.

“As part of the Trust’s focus on creating strong primary foundations for pupils, we have recently bolstered our primary school cluster leadership team, including appointing Lynsey Slater as primary director and executive principal at Egloskerry, following her role at Atlantic Academy where she led the school to be one the most improved in Devon for 2023.

“Alongside this, the Trust has also appointed Kate Eyres as the Principal at Launceston Primary School, who joins from Liskeard Hillfort Primary School. Leaders have said she will lead on the school’s next phase of its journey. “

Lynsey Slater, primary director at Athena Learning Trust and Principal of Egloskerry Primary School, said: “We are so proud of these amazing results across our primary schools – they are a true testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment of our pupils, colleagues, and leaders to ensure all of our children have the best possible foundation of learning and success.

“The success of our primary pupils and schools is at the core of our Athena Learning Trust’s mission and we have seen excellent progress through our collaboration and clear focus on primary education across the Trust. I am so excited to be working alongside our school communities and excellent colleagues to continue building on these strong foundations.”

Kate Eyres, principal at Launceston Primary School, said: “I am so privileged to be leading on the next stage of development at Launceston and really looking forward to working with our amazing pupils and colleagues at Launceston to continue growing and developing our strong learning provision.

“Whilst the team have made our temporary site feel so welcoming, we can’t wait to be in our new building. The planning is already underway to ensure that Launceston Primary continues to offer an amazing experience for our learners and their families.”
