PRIMARY school children in Cinderford have been mixing their love for maths and burgers to create healthier versions.

Years Four, Five and Six members of the St Anthony's School Cookery Club invited Cameron's Butchers to show them how to mix in the flavourings, form the meat into balls and then flatten them into burgers using two different types of machinery. The children then took home the fruits of their labour.

The club links its activities with the new curriculum and children used their mathematical skills to calculate how many burgers were needed and the quantity of beef required to make the right quantity as well as learning to work together.

Co-club leader, Kerri Walding said: "We think it is important for the children to have the opportunity to learn essential cookery skills and it is great being able to provide this with an afterschool club.

"It is even better when we have support from the local community and can give them opportunities they wouldn't otherwise get. We would like to thank Cameron for his generosity and for giving up his time to work with the children."
