Holsworthy Primary School pupils are pictured in their new cookery room, a much anticipated space where children can prepare healthy food on a regular basis, learning new skills which will be with them for life. Children from Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 are seen painting their own designs on the walls to make the room bright and welcoming while other children enjoy the Breakfast Club which has recently opened to support parents who need extended child care. Year 6 children have been involved as part of an after school Cookery Club where fresh, nutritious food is made; seasonal vegetables from the school's garden will be used so that children are part of the planting, growing, cooking, composting cycle which has become part of the school's 'Eco School' initiative. Inspectors are expected in the near future to assess the school on its Green Flag award — a top recognition of environmentally friendly initiatives where children take responsibility for much of the recycling, energy use and gardening. Local supermarkets have contributed a range of equipment to the recently refurbished classroom, various supermarkets from the 'Post' area have all been generous in their donations, including Tescos of Launceston who donated £100 towards a Ridan composter so that school can compost all of its food waste, including that produced at lunchtime. With Year 3 children is a representative from Waitrose, Holsworthy, who supported children with a visit to the supermarket, a talk on the origins of fruit and vegetables and a gift of produce so that children could make their own vegetable soup. Waitrose has also contributed food items for the breakfast and cookery clubs.
