THE fifth Road Safety Awareness Day was held at Holsworthy Community College recently.
The day was organised for all Year 9s. It was set up five years ago in response to the school tragically loosing an ex-student every year for the previous six years in road traffic accidents. Since running the day this trend seems to have stopped, thankfully.
The students watched some videos about the consequences of not wearing a seatbelt, driving after taking drugs or drinking and driving too fast as well as the dangers of using a mobile phone whilst driving.
The police then gave a talk about alcohol and the effects it has on the body. The students got to try out 'beer goggles' to give them an idea of what it would be like if they had been drinking.
Mr Forster did a presentation on first aid, in his role as a member of St John Ambulance. He told the students what they should do if they were the first on the scene of an accident. The students found this very informative and felt it could help them save someone's life one day.
They also had a talk about antisocial behaviour and how that can affect other people's lives — something which the students said they found 'quite enlightening'.
The social impact of road traffic accidents and how many people, other than the victims, are affected was also discussed.
See this week's 'Post' for a full report and another photo.
