THIS year’s Week St Mary Revel was held on September 15 when the new harvest queen processed through the village and was crowned for the coming year, amidst great celebrations and revelling.
The new harvest queen is Chloe Luxton, who was crowned by her sister Jade, who was last year’s harvest queen, in a ceremony in church led by the Rev Rob Dickenson.
The new tradition of honouring a valued community member as citizen of the year was also continued.
The citizen of the year this year is Mrs Norah Jewell, whose quiet concern, help for others and consistent support for all aspects of village life is greatly appreciated by the community.
She was presented with her sash by Len Davies, the chair of the citizen of the year committee, and best wishes were expressed for last year’s citizen, Mrs J Orchard, who was unable to be present. Norah thanked the village and promised to continue to serve her community.
For the harvest queen’s party, harvest queen Chloe Luxton, attendants Freya Luxton and Issy Martin and crown bearer Louis Motsch left the church together with last year’s queen and maid of honour, Jade Luxton, and her attendants Madison Johns, Miya Johns and Rory Sachs, and took their places once more on the harvest queen’s float, which had been magnificently decorated by their families.
Thanks have also been expressed to Pat Barriball, who helped with the decorations and with decking out the church with harvest displays.
They were led to the revel fair by Launceston Town Band, who played throughout the event and had been sponsored by Dick Bolt and Urchins of Bude.
Congratulations have been extended to all who attended and made such an effort with competitions and revel events.
Finally the revel tea was prepared and served in the chapel, and was very well attended.
After a week of preparatory events organised by the parish hall, the revel day was rounded off with a barbecue and entertainment by The Diversion.
The revel has become a shared church and chapel event, the two churches working hard together to raise funds, which are equally shared, and the efforts of the hall to create a sense of excitement in the week running up to the event have been very much appreciated.
