PARENTS, relatives, pupils, teachers and friends donned wellies and wet weather gear on July 9, to have some good old fashioned fun at Stoke Climsand Primary School’s Summer Fair and Family Fun day — one of their main fundraisers of the year.

Despite the Cornish mizzle, the school was buzzing with stalls — from making magic potions to jumble, games and toys, second hand uniform, soaps, pampering goodies, slate creations, cakes, cream teas to name but a few.

Once exhausting the options inside, the playing field held a whole host of things to do. The men dutifully flipped burgers and sausages for hungry folk, the vintage merry go round was very popular with toddlers and there was a lot to see and do.

Each year group came up with their own ideas for stalls.

There was guess the number of balloons in the car, a tombola, wet sponge throwing, apple bobbing, coconut shy, guess the name of the bunny, a bucket game, a basketball shootout game, all manned and set up by the children and their teachers.

Colin Jayne came with his vintage tractors, Cotehele Gig Club showcased their beautiful new gig, the Teyou, with an accompanying rowing challenge, there was the famous waterslide, not forgetting ice creams and a smoothie bar.

No summer fair would be complete without a raffle, with prizes up for grabs including dinners out and family tickets to local attractions.

Nicky Alder, of Friends of Stoke Climsland School (FOSCS), said: “What made it a truly community event was the atmosphere, despite the weather the community came together and the whole school worked incredibly hard to make it an event to remember.

“We managed to raise an impressive £2,000 and we are incredibly grateful to all local businesses who donated raffle prizes and to all pairs of hands who made the event possible and put in so much hard work.”

Formerly ‘Stoke Climsland School PTA’, Friends of Stoke Climsland School is open to anyone to join as a friend, such as parents, grandparents, neighbours, cousins, relatives and childminders.

The friends meet up once every two months to find and organise fundraising events. All the money raised goes straight back to the school, and straight back to the children.

The money raised by the FOSCS hugely assists in making the extra trips and equipment needed for the school either free for the parents or at least, affordable.

So far the friends have paid for each year group’s travel for a trip of their choice, the blinds in the hall, the electric piano, poly tunnel for gardening club, and each year group has had £100 to spend, and they assist Year 6 with their trip to London by match funding their own fundraising efforts.

Currently they are trying to raise enough money to upgrade the ailing IT systems to make a state of the art, interactive learning environment in each classroom, at the cost of £3,000 each.
