Anyone for cricket? From Years 5 and 6 at Golden Grove School-Ysgol Gelli Aur there was a resounding 'yes please.'

On Monday last week, 24 boys and girls took to the tarmac area for coaching in the basics of bat holding, stance, bowling and fielding.

The pupils, coached by headteacher Mr. Andrew Williams, started by just 'giving it a go.' Following this, Mr. Williams introduced a series of incremental steps which progressed to bowling overarm, batting to attack and in defence. Stumps were hit and balls went skyward as the training became competitive and it was pleasing to see the progress made in just an hour. The session was held as an additional activity for the pupils as a part of the varied extend hours provision in the school.

On Tuesday last week, the Grove Bikers cycle coaching group started with some core technique coaching and then got off tarmac to try out their newly acquired skills on grass, always a challenging transition. Correct gear selection, position on the bike and weight shift were the main coaching points covered by coaches Mrs. Bruce and Mr. Perry. The coaching sessions will lead up to a mini cyclocross competition later in the term.

Art sessions with Pauline Le Britton have continued to be popular with pupils who last week make prints from woodland materials, the end result was then used to brighten up the stage area in the school. This activity was run as a part of the whole school theme this term of 'Take a walk on the wild side.' The school woodlands have been in use with Greenlinks activities, including work towards the John Muir Discovery Award. On Wednesday, pupils from Class 7 were set a task of creating and promoting their own mini 'National' Park in the woodlands. From tales of old to majestic, rare and ancient trees to stories about a newly discovered woodland folk, the pupils pulled together to promote their park.

Headteacher Mr. Andrew Williams said: "We aim to offer our pupils a wide and exciting range of activities in the school. It is clear that they relish the opportunities offered, looking forward to the next session."
