MANY old scholars who started their grammar school education at Sir James Smiths Grammar School, Camelford in 1951 and 1952 plus two of their teachers, were recently reunited at The Riverside Restaurant in Camelford.

Some having travelled across the Atlantic and from mountain regions of Europe eagerly awaited for the door to open at 10.30am for a warming cup of coffee and plenty of chit chat with old friends mainly from across the south of England, many meeting again for the first time in more than fifty years.

After a light lunch which was much enjoyed the sun came out and favourite old haunts from yesteryears were explored, including Enfield Park, the old school playing field and the old grammar school, now with its old classrooms divided into office accommodation. Many memories were revived and stories exchanged.

The afternoon wander then took the group via Dark Lane to the new Sir James Smiths Comprehensive to marvel at the spacious classrooms, impressive facilities and equipment they could only of dreamt of when they were at school. Then back to The Riverside and a buffet meal which was much appreciated.

George Finlay said: The day, although one of the longest of the year, seemed all too short, quickly drawing to a close but leaving us with many cherished memories and old friendships rekindled.
