STUDENTS from Holsworthy Community College attended a celebrating diversity day at Ashbury Golf Club Hotel for Co-operative Schools on Tuesday, May 3.

There was an introductory talk in the main hall. Four people were stood the front and the students had to guess information about them such as where they are from, where their parents came from, their job and what languages they spoke. This task was given to them as a way to think about removing stereotyping. The whole day was about how to prevent bullying and radicalism.

They were given talks from a member of the police force, a Hindu woman, a speaker from Germany and a Muslim woman. These were the people who had been at the front earlier in the day. Each person taught them something different. The police told them how to stop/deal with radicalism. The Hindu woman told them what life was like growing up in India. The speaker from Germany told them about significant events in Devon, about migration throughout history and other significant events. Finally the Muslim woman told them what it is like to be a Muslim and how Muslims are not part of IS or other terrorist groups and what their life is like when people think they are.

Student Euan Scott said: “Overall I think the day was very interesting and we learned many new things. The day gave us an insight on how to deal with extremism and radicalism. We also were given the task of coming up with ideas to take back to our school to help deal with any such problems there and to raise awareness.”
