STUDENTS and staff at Callington Community College have been rewarded for all their hard work, dedication and commitment over the past two years by securing outstanding A level results.
This year’s cohort of students has once again performed superbly, and for many of the students it is a fitting end to their time at the college. They will now look forward with excitement in pursuing the next step of their young lives.
The key headlines are as follows:
• An improvement in the proportion of students securing higher grades, with the biggest improvement in the proportion of A*/A grades.
• The majority of subjects have seen a significant improvement in their outcomes
• 99% of students entered for A Level qualifications have successfully passed
• All vocational students entered successfully passed their qualifications with over 80% of grades being awarded a Distinction* or Distinction
• The average grade at A Level has risen by the equivalent of half a grade compared to last year’s outcomes.
• All students who have applied to Higher Education have been accepted into their first choice institution and on their preferred course.
Congratulations must go to all students in recognising their many achievements both inside and outside of the classroom. The students have embraced every aspect of sixth form life and have been superb role models to the younger students and the wider community. Many students have successfully completed additional qualifications such as Level 3 EPQ, Higher Sports Leaders Award (HSLA) and First Aid in addition to giving up their time to help run college clubs, support younger students, volunteer within the community, support curriculum areas as well as being involved in college productions, music shows, sporting events and challenge week.
A special mention must be given to Sarah G, who achieved all A grades across her four A level subjects and has been offered a place at the University of Oxford to read History and Politics. Sixth Form student of the Year, Sam Lane, achieved an incredible three A*s and an A and will now attend the University of St Andrews to read Astrophysics. Other students who achieved all A*s, As and Bs across all their A level subjects include Amy Griffin, Erin Hilsdon, Ryan Langman, Katie Neal, Ellie Petherick-Davies, Emily Warren, Beth Garlick and Lydia Glossop. Jodie Statham also achieved all Distinction* in her Sport and Music vocational qualifications.
The majority of students will travel the width and breadth of the country over the coming months to continue their studies at university. Students have been successful in securing places at Loughborough University, University of Leeds, University of Sheffield, University of Nottingham, University of Oxford, University of St Andrews, University of Bristol, University of Aberdeen, University of Middlesex, University of Westminster (London) and closer to home, Plymouth University, Falmouth University and Exeter University.
The diversity and range of courses that the students have been accepted to study include Early Childhood Studies, Children’s Nursing, Paramedic Science, History, Physics, Business, Film, Photography and Media, Psychology, Photography, Neuroscience, Graphic Design, Law, Astrophysics, Mathematics, Filmmaking, Marine Sciences, Primary Education, Biochemistry, Dance, Mechanical Engineering, Musical Theatre, Midwifery, Aerospace Engineering, Sociology and Criminology.
Other students have also been successful in securing higher level apprenticeships with Babcock International as well as local companies.
Head of Sixth Form, Alan Yendell said: “I am delighted for the students who have been rewarded for all their hard work, dedication and commitment over the past two years. This group of students have been an honour to work with and they have been a credit to themselves, their family and the college. The students have been brilliantly supported by our amazing teachers and staff and we are all really proud of them and we wish them continued success in their futures.”
Although results day can be an emotional time, Cornwall Council’s advice is, ’keep calm, there are lots of options available across Cornwall to make your next move a success and help you reach your full potential’.
Sally Hawken, the council’s cabinet portfolio holder for children and wellbeing, said: “We wish every student who is getting their results today the very best of luck and congratulate them and their families on their hard work and commitment getting to this stage. The wait is over and it will be a big relief to know the outcome today.
“Everyone is different and whether you now want to carry on your education or are thinking about taking those next steps in to work, there are a lot of different pathways open once you know your results. One of those paths will suit you.
“Some students will be taking up the opportunity to go to university but that may not be the right option for everyone. Apprenticeships are becoming more and more popular with young people who want to learn at work, get formal off-the-job training and a structured programme that takes them through the skills they need to do a job well.
“Traineeships are also available to provide young people with the necessary skills and experience to access apprenticeships and wider employment opportunities.”
