The children of Shebbear Community School enjoyed a week of science based activities which aimed to inspire the children.
The week got off to a spectacular start with a visit from ‘Wonderstruck’ who ran a day of science based workshops and presentations. The children learnt about forces (by means of a bed of nails), how jet engines work and what happens when gunpowder is added to Rice Krispies!
The children made rockets, which were launched across the playing fields, and designed and made some fan powered cars.
Later in the week Mrs Recycle was in school talking to the children about the virtues of reusing waste and Gareth Cross, a vet from the Whitton Park veterinary surgery, spoke to the younger children about his job and how he cares for animals.
Other children had the chance to visit one of the Shebbear College science labs to undertake a range of activities including testing electrical circuits and setting some food alight.
The various activities were organised by the school’s science subject leader, Charlotte Andrew, who is confident that it will encourage more Shebbear pupils to take an active interest in science both now and in the future.
