ON December 14, 48 Year 11s from Holsworthy Community College went to London for a three-day extravaganza, write Abi Johnson and Lucy Smith.
We arrived in Holsworthy for 5 o’clock in the morning, to start our journey to London. We arrived in London at 11.30am, an hour earlier than expected.
The first thing we did was to go to the London Dungeons. We had a tour of the dungeon, with actors and actresses who took us along and explained the history of London.
After coming out of the London Dungeons we had lunch and went onto the London Eye to see across London.
We then went on a boat trip along the Thames where there was a man telling us about the different buildings in London. Once we finished this we went and checked into the hostel, to get settled, before we left to go and have tea and to watch the Hunger Games in the cinema. The film was amazing. We then walked back to the youth hostel and were in our rooms at 12.30am.
After being woken up at 7.15am the next day, we all got ready and, after going down to the basement for breakfast, we took a tube (the wrong way).
After figuring out we were even further away than before, we got on a different train, which took us over to the Houses of Parliament.
On entry our bags were searched and we went through airport-type security before being allowed on the premises. We were split into two groups — team Scotty and team Watto — and taken around by two tour guides; it was really interesting.
We got to go and see the House of Lords and the House of Commons as well as many other rooms, which were decorated with gold and enormous paintings.
We then left the Houses of Parliament and walked to the British Museum, which had some amazing artifacts and machines to look at. We spent three hours here before travelling to Covent Garden for dinner and shopping time.
We then went to the National Theatre to watch War Horse, which was a great performance, which everyone enjoyed. After watching War Horse we took a tube home and packed for leaving the next morning.
On our final day we were woken at 7am and told we had to be outside by 8.30am, packed and with breakfast eaten. After room checks we got on our coach and went to the Jack the Ripper tour, where again we were split into our two groups and taken around Whitechapel by tour guides.
We were shown where the murders took place and shown pictures of the victims.
After then walking to the Tower of London most of us had our lunch and then went off to explore the castle — looking at the Crown Jewels, military medals and the torture chambers.
We spent a few hours here and it was really interesting, especially since we are studying crime and punishment through the ages in Britain in our History lessons. It helped lots of us understand many things better.
After leaving the Tower of London we got back on our coach and had a seven-hour journey home, with a 45-minute stop for dinner.
Overall we all had a fantastic time — learning and understanding London through the ages much better and also the pleasures we had of seeing the sights whilst being there.
We would highly recommend the trip to future students as it is an educationally worthwhile trip.
