A FAMILY had their own sword in the stone — or rather sword in the pool — moment during their recent Cornish holiday, writes Suzanne Cleave.
The Jones family from Norton, north of Doncaster, were holidaying at a campsite in Boyton when they decided to make the most of the warm weather and enjoy a trip to Dozmary Pool on Bodmin Moor.
Dad Paul and mum Nicola McAdam had told their two girls — Matilda, seven, and Lois, four, the legendary story of King Arthur.
Legend has it that the pool is the final resting place of King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur.
It was supposedly thrown in the lake by Sir Bedivere after the Battle of Camlann and Arthur’s death.
While they were paddling in the pool, Matilda made a fascinating discovery.
Paul explained: “She looked down and said, dad, there’s the sword. First I said not to be so silly, but I looked a bit closer, and reached in, about four or five feet deep, and picked it up. It was just there laying on the bottom of the lake.”
On closer examination, Paul said the sword does not appear to be very old, and could possibly be a prop that was left behind, but the family were very intrigued as to how it got there.
The item made the long journey back to Yorkshire, to be displayed somewhere in the family home.
Paul added: “It will be taking pride of place up there.”
