CALLS to reopen Launceston Police Station’s public facing desk were high on the agenda as local politicians met with Alison Hernandez, the police and crime commissioner.

Cornwall Councillors Adrian Parsons, Damon Dennis, Adam Paynter and Nicky Chopak were joined by Launceston deputy mayor John Conway and MP Ben Maguire for a tour of the town’s police station.

The local councillors pressed Ms Hernandez on their wish to see the reopening of Launceston Police Station’s public enquiry desk amid a wave of reopenings elsewhere in Cornwall.

Cllr Parsons said after the visit: “Thank you to Alison Hernandez the police and crime commissioner for taking the time to visit Launceston Police station. Meeting senior police officers and local councillors Nicky Chopak, Damon Dennis, Adam Paynter and John Conway. Discussing the possibility of re opening the front desk in the station and local crime issues. It felt a very productive meeting and we look forward to working with her in the future.”

Cllr Paynter added: “It was good to meet with Alison Hernandez andsenior police officers. Launceston is growing and being able to easily access the police is really important. We had a tour around the station as well as the custody suite which is currently mothballed. We also discussed rural crime such as the stolen mower from Werrington Cricket Club and other local sports clubs this year, as well as drug use and supply in the area. Please ensure you report any crime to 111 or crimestoppers. I will continue to press to reopen the front desk to the public.”

A spokesperson for the office of the police and crime commissioner said: “On September 19, the commissioner visited Launceston Police Station and had a positive meeting with local councillors, MP Ben Maguire and police officers to discuss the possibility of reopening its police enquiry office due to demand for its return.”
