YET again the small and friendly North Cornwall village of St Tudy punched well above its weight and delivered a fantastic carnival — this year even bigger and better than the success of last year.

On Saturday, July 13, hundreds of people, both young and old, local and from further away came to ‘the big carnival in a little village’.

It turned out to be an amazing spectacle of 45 entrants across 12 categories which assembled in the playing fields and processed around the village, bedecked with bunting and filled with cheering spectators, enjoying the floats and listening to the uplifting music provided by the Camelford Town Band and Samba Kernow.

There was a wide range of food and drink that was enjoyed by everyone throughout the afternoon and evening. Stallholders selling all things ‘carnival themed’ were kept busy by children and adults alike getting into the carnival spirit.

For the first time this year children were also treated to lots of fun led by the Hengar Manor entertainment team.

The atmosphere was electric and the judges, who had a challenging time choosing the winners, remarked on the very high standard of entries and the fantastic effort everyone had gone to.

This year the carnival had a particularly impressive array of nine vintage and classic vehicles and a wide range of different themed entrants across the categories. The Future Youth Dance group also treated spectators to a dance display.

The Rev David Seymour announced the winners and the St Tudy carnival royalty presented the prizes and trophies.

A lively after party followed well into the evening with music provided by Three Minute Warning.

Earlier in the week more than 200 villagers had also enjoyed a quiz night, charity football match and great food and drink in the carnival marquee whilst being entertained by Adam Cornford on Friday night before the main event on Saturday.

The big carnival in the little village certainly proved to be an accurate description. A spokesperson added: “St Tudy is getting itself the well-deserved reputation of hosting the best village carnival in the area.”
