LAUNCESTON College is seeking the help of local employers to accept students into work experience placements on both an extended and short term basis.
The current economic climate has understandably had an adverse affect on the number of businesses willing and able to take a student on to 'learn the trade' because of business pressures.
Mike Panting, the college's Head of Vocational faculty, is appealing for help to fill the gap. He commented: "We have a number of youngsters who are struggling to find placements particularly in the construction, motor mechanics and health care sectors. I would urge employers to try to help us to train students who in turn will hopefully go on to qualify and fill the local skills market in the future
BENEFITS
LATER
"In past recessions when things have picked up there has been a skills shortage and we hope employers will have the capacity to invest in informal, on the job training now to reap the benefits later?"
There is a need for one day a week placements between now and May in motor vehicle mechanics and body repair shops, motorcycle repair and joinery workshops. In addition there is a need for a wide variety of trades and professions to assist with the annual week long placements for year 10 students between June 29 and July 3.
If you are able to help, further details can be obtained from Mike Panting on 01566 772468.
