BUDEHAVEN’S Sixth Form open evening took place on Tuesday where prospective students were able to meet headteacher, Tracey Reynolds and assistant headteacher and director of Post-16, Matthew White, to discuss their option choices.

Subject leaders were on hand to make presentations on the course content within their respective A Levels.

When students enrol at Budehaven, they are expected to undertake enrichment activities as well as their three or four A Levels. These activities include the Higher Sports Leaders Award, mentoring younger students, Duke of Edinburgh, being a sixth form committee member or an assistant in The Haven, Budehaven’s integrated health centre.

It is widely agreed that extra-curricular activities are essential when a student applies to higher education or work, as they show that a student is developing more skills that are transferrable to later life. Some subjects offer specific activities, which helps students develop their knowledge and skills; economics and business is one such course.

At Budehaven, economics and business A Level is regarded as a popular and successful course. Ofsted commented that: “In business studies, the work in students’ books and the quality of feedback provided by teachers is of a high quality. Students in these classes are able to explain what level they are working at and have a deep understanding of how they can reach the next level. The work in books is substantial and show that students are making at least good progress.”

Extra curricular activities are viewed as an integral element of the course and alongside ongoing competitions such as the Student Investor Challenge and Plymouth University competitions, this year Budehaven economics students have had the exciting opportunity of being the only Cornish representative in the Bank of England’s Target Two Point Zero competition.

This oversubscribed national competition will see Budehaven students Megan Thornton, Amber Sobey, Emily Medland and Chloe Mobbs take on the role of the Monetary Policy Committee to try to steady the UK economy.

Students visited the historic bank and museum in London as part of their preparation for their formal presentation to members of the Bank of England on Wednesday, November 30 with the hope of winning the top prize of an internship at the bank.

In 2016, Budehaven A Level results were graded as ‘outstanding’, ranking them in the top 10% nationally of all schools and colleges.
